Sony Mdrnc22/Blk Noise Canceling HeadphoneDec 22, 2008 The Sony Mdrnc22 noice canceling headphones work very well. I have used them on multiple flights now. They block airplane engine noise almost completely. They mute higher frequencies (people talking, babies crying, etc) quite a bit, but not so much that you can't hear if, say, a flight attendant asks you a question. I also use this headset in the gym. It cuts out the low frequency rumble that some exercise equipment like treadmills produce.
This product is the earbud style of headphone. It comes with three different size rubber inserts to fit different ear canal sizes. It is important to choose an insert to fit your ear canals snugly. The effectiveness of noise cancellation is compromised if exterior noise can leak around the earbuds into your ear canals.
I particularly like the very small size of this unit. It easily fits in my shirt pocket. I also own an older over-ear style of noise-cancellation headphone. I don't like them because they are bulky to carry and make my ears hurt if I wear them for a few hours (like on a cross-country flight). For me, the earbud style headphone is much more comfortable. I can listen to sound sources at very low levels and still have high quality stereo sound. Even after a six hour flight of non-stop use, I have no ear discomfort of any kind.
There is a very slight white-noise hiss with these headphones. Some people might find that annoying, but I don't. It is very low level, and I actually find it kind of soothing.
I gave this product 4 stars instead of 5 because it has a somewhat flimsy springclip that you use to clip the headphones to your shirt. I exchanged the first unit I bought because the clip broke after a few uses. Without the clip, there is nothing to keep the weight of the small battery/electronics unit off of the cord to the earbuds and they pull out of your ears. Hopefully I will have better luck with the 2nd pair.

Doesn't work Now this stupid thing wont let me vote no starsDec 17, 2008 Not much to say, IT DOESN'T WORK. It works as ear buds but there is not noise-cancelling going on.

GreatNov 18, 2008 Have used these for some time, bought this pair as a back up. They are comfortable on long flights of 10-14 hours and the noise cancellation is as good as the Boise headsets without the bulk; I no longer carry my Boise Q2's. The sound quality is good, the battery life is long and the price is reasonable; what more can I say! An excellent product.
a GREAT productNov 04, 2008 My 13 + hour trip from Atlanta to Tokyo was actually tolerable thanks to my Sony Walkman and noise canceling earphones. What more can I say!
